Personal lubricant, or lube, reduces friction so sex feels smoother and safer, especially for anal play. Non-Friction Products is the Toronto company behind FuckWater, a lube range made to answer what gay men wanted from their lube.

About Non-Friction Products
Non-Friction Products Inc. is a small Toronto company that makes one brand of lube: FuckWater. It was started by Robert Gazzoli and two friends, all gay men. Between them they had experience in manufacturing, business and chemistry. They began by asking other gay men what they wanted from a lube, then tested 14 formulas before choosing one.
The US trademark record shows FuckWater first in use in November 2011. By 2013, Toronto LGBTQ magazine Xtra was writing about the new brand. Its tagline was already “When spit and courage aren’t enough.” In 2017 the original formula gained FDA 510(k) clearance as a personal lubricant. Non-Friction registered the tagline as a US trademark in 2018 and the FUCKWATER name in 2020.
FuckWater product lines
FuckWater comes in four formulas, each with a different base and feel.
FuckWater Original: the white hybrid
Original is the formula that started the brand, and the one with FDA 510(k) clearance (K171730, 2017). It is a water-based lotion with added dimethicone, a silicone, which gives it a white, creamy look and a slicker, longer glide. The FDA file lists its viscosity at 20,000 to 26,000 cP, so it is thick and cushioning. It is glycerin-free and paraben-free, and comes in 60 ml to 475 ml bottles. Among performance lubricants, Original is built for long anal sessions.
FuckWater Clear: classic water-based
Clear is the traditional option: a clear, water-based gel that uses plant-derived glycerin for slip. It is fragrance-free, rinses off with water and is safe with every sex toy material, including silicone. Because it has no silicone, it can dry faster than Original, so you may need to reapply. It comes in 60 ml and 475 ml bottles. Compared with most personal lubes, Clear is a simple, no-fuss choice for sex toys and quick play.
FuckWater Thick: five times thicker than Clear
Thick is a clear water-based gel thickened with hydroxyethylcellulose, a plant-derived thickener. Non-Friction says it is five times thicker than Clear, which gives a cushioned feel and less dripping. It adds vitamin E and contains no desensitisers. It is safe with latex and polyisoprene condoms and with all sex toy materials. Thick comes in 60 ml to 475 ml bottles and suits anal play for people who prefer water-based gels.
FuckWater Premium Silicone
Premium Silicone is a pure silicone lube made from dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane. It does not soak into the skin or evaporate, so it stays slick for long sessions and even under water. That makes it the pick for the shower, the bath and marathon sessions. It is safe with latex condoms but should not be used on silicone sex toys, as it can damage their surface. It comes in 60 ml, 120 ml, 240 ml and 475 ml bottles.
Why anal sex needs a different lube
The anus does not make its own lubrication, unlike the vagina. That is why lube is essential, not optional, for anal sex. A thin, watery lube can be absorbed quickly, leaving friction that causes discomfort or small tears. Thicker lubes stay in place and keep a cushion between skin and skin, or skin and condom. That is the problem FuckWater’s founders set out to solve. Original, Thick and Premium Silicone are all designed to stay put for longer. Apply lube to both partners, and add more as soon as anything starts to feel dry.
Hybrid, water-based or silicone?
The biggest choice is the base. Water-based lubes, like Clear and Thick, rinse off easily, are safe with every sex toy and condom, and feel light. Their downside is that the water slowly evaporates or soaks in, so you may need to top up. Our water vs silicone lube guide explains the trade-offs in more detail.
Silicone lubes, like Premium Silicone, do not soak in or dry out. They last much longer and work under water, but they need soap to wash off, and they can damage silicone sex toys.
FuckWater Original sits between the two. It is water-based, so it rinses off, but its dimethicone adds a longer-lasting silicone slip. That makes it a good fit for long sessions when you do not want to keep reapplying.
What is inside FuckWater Original
The FDA 510(k) file gives a rare look at the formula. Its listed ingredients include water, propylene glycol, isopropyl palmitate, dimethicone, hydroxyethylcellulose, polysorbate 20 and sodium benzoate. The pH is 7.2 to 7.6, close to neutral. The file lists its osmolality at 2,300 to 3,400 mOsm/kg. That is higher than the 1,200 mOsm/kg limit the World Health Organization suggests for personal lubes. A high osmolality can draw water from delicate tissue, so if you are prone to irritation, try Thick or Clear first.
The white, lotion-like look of Original has another use. Our look at cum-style lubes covers why some people like a lube that looks like semen for role play and solo sessions.

Choosing your first FuckWater
For anal sex with long sessions, start with Original, the brand’s signature white hybrid. If you mostly use silicone sex toys, choose Clear or Thick, as both are water-based and safe with silicone. For a cushioned water-based feel, Thick is the better pick. Choose Premium Silicone for shower and bath play, or when you want the longest glide of all.
FuckWater is not only for anal sex. People with vaginal dryness can use the water-based formulas for comfort during sex. Our guide to vaginal dryness explains common causes and when to see a doctor.
Who FuckWater suits — and who should look elsewhere
FuckWater suits gay and bi men, and anyone who wants a thick, long-lasting lube for anal sex. It also suits couples who want one brand with a water-based, hybrid and silicone option.
The bold name will not suit everyone, especially as a gift. People who use polyurethane condoms should avoid Original. Anyone with sensitive or easily irritated skin may prefer a lower-osmolality, gentler lube from our sexual health products.
Please read — safety first. Patch test any new lube on your inner arm first, and stop if you feel burning or itching. Use only latex or polyisoprene condoms with FuckWater Original, as its FDA file says it is not compatible with polyurethane. Never use Premium Silicone on silicone sex toys. Use plenty of lube for anal sex, go slowly and stop at sharp pain or bleeding. Silicone lube makes floors and showers slippery, so wipe up spills. Lube is not a contraceptive and does not protect against STIs on its own. This information is general in nature and is not medical advice. If you have a health condition or ongoing discomfort, stop use and speak with a qualified health professional. |
