About Gel Works
Gel Works began with Paul Whyte’s research. In the late 1970s he was a biological chemistry student designing personal lubricants. By the mid-1980s, the HIV/AIDS crisis had reached Australia. The lubes of the day were mostly copies of surgical gels, made for short medical exams, and oil-based lubes damaged latex condoms. Whyte set out to make a long-lasting, condom-safe lube for gay men, and Wet Stuff was the result.
It was not easy. In a 2024 interview, Whyte described funding being stripped and machinery stolen in those early years. Gel Works survived, and Whyte is still owner, managing director and chemist. The company makes its lubes at its own factory in Rouse Hill, north-west Sydney, and exports them overseas. Over four decades it says it has developed more than 70 formulations.
Gel Works product lines
Almost everything Gel Works makes is sold under the Wet Stuff name, grouped by base and purpose.
Wet Stuff water-based: Gold, Plus, Lite and more
The water-based range is where Wet Stuff began. Gold is the long-lasting, richer formula, Plus is silky and gentle on sensitive skin, and Lite is light and cooling. Slippery, Aloe Vera and Plain with Vitamin E add other textures. Gel Works says these are pH balanced, quickly adjust to the pH of body fluids, and are safe to swallow in small amounts. Unlike many water-based lubes, Wet Stuff gels are made in Australia by the chemist who designed them. They also wash out of fabric with plain water.
Wet Stuff Naturally: for very sensitive skin
Naturally is Gel Works’ gentlest formula, made to avoid common skin sensitivities. It has no glycerin, parabens, petrochemicals or fragrance, and Gel Works says it is hypoallergenic, pH balanced and sustainably produced. It dries without stickiness, so it does not need washing off. Our guide to sex allergies explains why some people react to standard lubes and what to look for instead.
Flavoured and warming water-based lubes
Wet Stuff also makes flavoured water-based lubes for oral play: Strawberry, Banana, Peach, Watermelon and Salted Caramel, all sugar-free. Peppermint gives a cool tingle, and Warming builds gentle heat with movement. They come in 100 g tubes, are safe with condoms and rinse off with water like the rest of the water-based range. These suit couples who want to taste the lube or add a temperature change.
Wet Stuff silicone bodyglides: Original, Premium, Elite, Gloss and Touch
The silicone bodyglides last far longer than water-based gels and stay slippery under water. Original is the classic long-lasting formula; Premium has a smooth satin texture that absorbs as you go. Elite turns from liquid to a satin glide and is Gel Works’ pick for latex garments and rubber gear. Gloss is a non-drip gel with the longest glide of the range, and Touch is light enough for full-body massage. These silicone lubes are preservative-free, so they suit many sensitive users, but they should not be used on silicone sex toys.
The Wet Stuff anal range: Thrust, Relax, Sublime, Pleasure, Raw and Premium
Gel Works sells a dedicated set of 110 g silicone lubes for anal sex. Thrust builds glide for about 40 minutes, then disperses into the skin. Relax adds jojoba oil, and Sublime slowly forms a glide surface that intensifies over time. Pleasure uses phenyl trimethicone for a soft, sealing feel, and Raw doubles as a massage glide. Compared with most anal lubes, these are designed to last a whole session without reapplying.
Wet Stuff Secrets and Touch: creamy and massage glides
Secrets is a creamy, lotion-like lube that slowly disappears like a moisturiser. It is condom-safe, low irritant and doubles as a massage cream, in 90 g tubes up to 1 kg pumps. Touch is a delicate silicone glide that the skin absorbs almost completely, so it does not need washing off, yet stays slippery in the shower. These suit people who want one product for massage and sex.
Wet Stuff Ready: lube capsules
Ready is an unusual format: soft capsules filled with Original silicone bodyglide. The receptive partner inserts a capsule ahead of time; it dissolves and releases lube where it is needed. Each capsule holds about 1.5 g of silicone and dissolves within about 15 to 30 minutes. Like the other silicone glides, it should not be used with silicone sex toys. Ready suits couples who want to be lubricated before play begins, without stopping to apply lube.
Ignight: tingling arousal lube
Ignight is a creamy lube with a tingling effect. Gel Works says the tingle comes in waves, then the cream turns into a smooth bodyglide gloss. It is condom-safe and low irritant, and comes in a 30 ml pump. Gel Works notes it is not suited to sex work. Test it on a small area first, as tingling products do not suit everyone.
Wet Stuff Clean and Bodcare
Wet Stuff Clean is a cleaner and sanitiser spray for sex toys and accessories. Bodcare is a separate Gel Works line of gels and sprays. It includes Caress, a warming and tingling gel for the clitoris, and Endgel, a botanical anal comfort gel. There is also a fragranced room and body spray with blood orange and ylang ylang. Bodcare suits people who want arousal and comfort products alongside their lube.
Water-based, silicone or creamy: which Wet Stuff?
Water-based Wet Stuff is the easiest to live with. It is safe with every condom and sex toy, rinses off with water and washes out of sheets. The trade-off is that water slowly absorbs into the skin, so you may need to top up during longer sessions.
Silicone Wet Stuff lasts much longer and stays slippery in the shower or bath. It is preservative-free, which suits many sensitive users. But it needs soapy water to wash off, and it can damage silicone sex toys, so pair it with glass, steel or hard plastic instead.
Secrets and Touch sit between the two, with a creamy or massage-friendly feel. Our article on five ways to use lube shows how one bottle can cover massage, foreplay, sex and sex toys.
Lube for sensitive skin and anal care
If standard lubes sting or itch, the ingredients are usually the cause. Glycerin, parabens and fragrance are common triggers. Wet Stuff Naturally leaves all three out, and Plus and Lite are designed to be gentle. Silicone lubes such as Original and Premium are preservative-free, which helps some people too.
The skin around the anus is especially delicate, and it can be more sensitive after waxing, shaving or skin treatments. Our guide to anal bleaching covers aftercare for that area. Wait until any irritation settles before using lube or having anal sex.
Wet Stuff and latex
Gel Works built its name on latex safety. Oil-based products weaken latex condoms, which is why Wet Stuff was developed as a water-based alternative in the first place. Today every Wet Stuff formula is described by Gel Works as condom-compatible. Elite goes further: Gel Works recommends it for latex garments, rubber gloves and other delicate rubber gear that needs low friction. Thrust can also be used to polish latex clothing. If you wear latex or use latex sex toys, choose a silicone Wet Stuff and avoid oils entirely.
How Wet Stuff lubes compare
All are condom-compatible according to Gel Works. Check the base before using with sex toys.

Choosing your first Wet Stuff
For an all-round lube, start with Gold. It is rich, long-lasting and safe with everything. If you have sensitive skin, choose Naturally or Plus. For long sessions or water play, try Original or Premium silicone. For anal sex, Thrust is the best-known pick, with Relax for a softer feel and Sublime for marathon sessions. Couples who want to taste the lube can start with a flavoured tube.
Who Gel Works suits — and who should look elsewhere
Gel Works suits anyone who wants an Australian-made lube with a long track record. It also suits gay men looking for a dedicated anal range, and people with sensitive skin who need a gentler formula.
If you only use silicone sex toys, stick to the water-based or creamy formulas. People wanting a numbing or desensitising anal lube will not find one here, as Wet Stuff focuses on glide rather than anaesthetic. Anyone with a known allergy should read the full ingredient list on the label first.
Please read — safety first. Patch test any new lube on your inner arm, and stop if you feel burning or itching. Do not use silicone lubes on silicone sex toys. Silicone lubes are very slippery if spilled, so wipe floors and shower bases straight away. Use plenty of lube for anal sex, go slowly and stop at sharp pain. Tingling and warming products such as Ignight, Warming and Caress can sting sensitive skin; use a small amount first. Lube is not a contraceptive and does not protect against STIs on its own. This information is general in nature and is not medical advice. If you have a health condition or ongoing discomfort, stop use and speak with a qualified health professional. |
