A cream lubricant, or lube cream, is thicker than a gel and slower to dry out. Boy Butter turned that idea into a brand, selling oil-based and water-based creams in tubs that look like they belong in the fridge.

Why choose Boy Butter Boy Butter makes cream lube, which stays slick longer than most gels. The Original is a coconut-oil cream that still rinses off with water. H2O and Clear are water-based, so they suit latex condoms and every toy material. The brand launched in 2003 and made the first gay lubricant TV ad in 2008. The tubs look like margarine, so nobody blinks if one is left on the bedside table.

About Boy Butter
Eyal Feldman came up with the name while working at Nasty Pig, a gay clothing store in New York. He first sold a creamy lube from an existing maker under his own Boy Butter label, packed in a tub that looked like margarine. He launched it at International Mr Leather in Chicago in 2003, and within a year it was selling in Europe and Australia.
Feldman later worked with cosmetics laboratories to develop the formula the brand makes today. His aim was a lube that lasted like silicone but washed off with water, with no stains on the sheets. He then added a water-based cream, which the brand says was the first stable, latex-safe cream lube. The company now trades as BBL LLC from California.
Ads that made television history
Boy Butter has always sold itself with humour. In 2008 it aired what XBIZ reported as the first gay lubricant TV ad, on Bravo in Los Angeles. In 2015 it released an infomercial-style spot that the brand called the first gay infomercial, timed for RuPaul's Drag Race.
The campaigns kept coming. In January 2026, "The Beach Cowboy" premiered during Season 18 of RuPaul's Drag Race on MTV. It also ran on CNBC, Fox Business, ESPN and Fox Sports.
Boy Butter product lines
Every Boy Butter line is built on the same idea of a cream that lasts but cleans up easily. Here is each one, from the Original to the retired formulas.
Boy Butter Original: the coconut-oil cream
The Original is the formula that started the brand in 2003. It is a coconut-oil cream homogenised with a silicone ingredient, so it spreads thick and goes clear on the skin. Boy Butter says it lasts as long as a silicone lube yet washes off skin and sheets with water. It is not safe with latex condoms, only non-latex ones such as polyurethane. It comes in sizes from 2 oz minis and 5 ml sachets up to a 25 oz XL bottle and the classic 16 oz tub. Among oil-based lubes, it is one of the few that rinses away without soap.
Boy Butter H2O: the water-based cream
H2O was first sold as You'll Never Know It Isn't Boy Butter. It copies the Original's creamy feel with a water base, adding vitamin E, shea butter and aloe vera. That makes it safe with latex condoms and all toy materials, including silicone, glass and rubber. It slowly soaks into the skin rather than sitting on top. It is the formula to choose when you want cream texture but need condom safety.
Boy Butter Clear: the silicone-style gel
Clear is a concentrated water-based gel rather than a cream. Boy Butter makes it with Invisigel, a water-soluble ingredient it describes as patented, to mimic the slick feel of silicone lube. It contains vitamin E and aloe vera, is free of oils and pigments, and is safe with latex and all toys. A few drops go a long way. It suits anyone who prefers a clear, see-through glide to a cream.
Boy Butter Warming: a heated cream
Warming is a water-based cream with coconut oil and an ingredient that creates a gentle heat where it is applied. The brand's own direction is simple: if the area warms, you are doing it right. It is listed as latex-safe, toy-safe and washable with water. Test a small amount on the inner wrist first, because warming sensations vary from person to person.
Extreme and Comfort Cream: the desensitising formulas
Extreme and Comfort Cream are Boy Butter's desensitising lubricants. Both contain 5% benzocaine, a local anaesthetic, in the brand's cream base. Extreme dates back to at least 2007, when it was also sold as Black Label, and a water-based Extreme H2O followed in 2009. Comfort Cream arrived in 2017 and is listed as latex-safe. Read the label warnings in full before use, and patch-test first.
Gold Label and Platinum: the anniversary tubs
Boy Butter marked its 10th birthday with the Gold Label edition, a gold 16 oz tub of the Original formula. The brand says proceeds planted 50 trees in 2013. The 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition followed in a metallic tub, again with the Original formula and a share of proceeds to reforestation. Both are collector's tubs as much as lube, and they make a talking-point gift.
Bonerz: the supplement line
Bonerz is Boy Butter's only product that is not a lubricant. It is a herbal supplement, sold in single packs, four-packs and twelve-packs in the United States. The listed ingredients include tongkat ali, horny goat weed, maca and ginkgo. Feldman launched it as a companion to the lube range. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplement of this kind.
Fresca and Lucky: earlier formulas
Boy Butter has retired several formulas over the years. Fresca and Fresca H2O, launched in 2011, were mildly cooling creams with a hint of menthol. The brand says Fresca H2O was chosen for a New York University sexual-health study of 600 men. Lucky was a female-focused lube line that shared Boy Butter's first TV ad in 2008. Neither appears on the brand's current website.
Why a cream lube feels different
Most water-based lubes are gels. They feel light, but water evaporates and gels can turn tacky. A cream holds more moisture and oil in suspension, so it stays slick for longer. For more on what makes lube dry out, see why some lubes dry out fast.
Boy Butter's oil-based Original goes a step further. Coconut oil gives long-lasting glide, while emulsifiers let it rinse away with water instead of sitting on skin and fabric. The trade-off is condom safety, which is why the brand made H2O. Many people use the Original with male masturbators, where condoms are not involved.
Condoms, toys and the right formula
Oil breaks down latex, so the Original cannot be used with latex condoms. H2O, Clear and Warming are water-based and condom-safe. Comfort Cream is also listed as latex-safe. If you use condoms for every session, choose a water-based formula.
For toys, water-based formulas suit every material. Boy Butter says the Original is silicone-toy safe. If you are unsure about a toy, patch-test the lube on the base first, or switch to H2O. Lube has more uses than sex, too, and five everyday ways to use lube runs through them, including massage.
Ingredients and texture
The Original lists vegetable oils, glycerin, vitamin E, emulsifiers and phenyl trimethicone, a silicone ingredient. H2O combines water, vitamin E, shea butter and aloe vera, and it contains preservatives. Clear is built on water with Invisigel, vitamin E and aloe vera. Check each ingredient list if you have allergies or sensitive skin.
The Original is a firm, butter-like cream in the tub that melts as it warms. H2O is softer and whipped. Clear is a gel. All three wash off with water.

Choosing your first Boy Butter
If you play solo or skip condoms, start with the Original. It is the brand's signature and the longest-lasting cream. If you use condoms or want one lube for everything, choose H2O. It is the closest thing to the Original that is safe with latex.
Prefer a gel? Clear gives a slick, silicone-like feel without the clean-up. For anal play, a thick cream suits most people better than a thin gel. Compare the texture with other anal lubes before you choose.
Who Boy Butter suits — and who should look elsewhere
Boy Butter suits people who like a thick, long-lasting lube that still rinses off with water. It is a favourite for anal play and masturbation, and its food-style tubs make it an easy gift.
Look elsewhere if you want a thin, runny lube or a flavoured one. If you need a lube with a very short ingredient list, compare the labels first. Anyone using latex condoms should choose H2O or Clear, or one of our other water-based lubes.
Please read — safety first. The Original, XL and anniversary tubs are oil-based: never use them with latex condoms or latex barriers, only non-latex ones such as polyurethane. For latex, choose H2O or Clear. Patch-test any new lube on your inner arm, and stop if you notice burning, itching or a rash. Warming and desensitising formulas are stronger: use a small amount and avoid the eyes. Numbing lubes can hide pain that warns you to stop, so go slowly during anal play and never use them to push through discomfort. Keep tubs closed between uses and scoop with clean fingers. This information is general in nature and is not medical advice. If you have a health condition or ongoing discomfort, stop use and speak with a qualified health professional. |
