About Bathmate
Bathmate began with one engineer, John Oakes, in West Yorkshire. Bathmate says he started work in 2004 on a water-based pump for a friend with a spinal injury, after finding air pumps hard to use. His first design, the Hercules, launched in 2006. The larger Goliath followed in 2008.
The business runs from Horbury, near Wakefield. Ultramax Products Limited, set up in 2005, owns the trademarks and the European patent. DX Products Limited, at the same address, is the FDA-registered maker and the name on Bathmate's wholesale site. Bathmate says it had reached more than 70 countries by 2013 and invested £1 million in a dedicated factory. For more of the backstory, read our history of the Hydromax and Bathmate range.
Patents, trademarks and FDA registration
The core design is protected. European Patent EP 2 593 053 B1, granted in March 2016, names John Oakes as inventor and Ultramax Products as owner. It covers a pump with a chamber, a one-way valve and a squeezable gaiter, or bellows, that pushes water out to create the vacuum.
BATHMATE has been a registered US trademark since 2010 and was renewed in 2019. HYDROMAX was registered in the US in 2013 through an international registration. DX Products Limited holds FDA establishment registration 3010386378, current for 2026, with the Bathmate pumps listed. That means the FDA knows who makes the products and what they are. It is not an FDA approval or endorsement, and we do not claim one.
Bathmate product lines
Bathmate's pumps come in three generations, with extras built around them.
Hydro series: the original Hercules design
The Hydro series is where Bathmate began. The Hercules launched in 2006 and is now sold as the Hydro7, sized for an erect length of 5 to 7 inches. The bigger Goliath followed in 2008 and is about 30% larger. Both use a simple bellows at the base and stick-on comfort pads. These are the plainest design in the range, made for use in the bath or shower.
Hydromax: the second generation
Hydromax arrived in 2012 with the X30, which Bathmate says gives 35% more power than the Hercules. It brought a redesigned bellows, a new valve and removable comfort pads. Models are now named by size: Hydromax3, 5, 7, 8 and 9, where the number is the top of the erect length range. These are the core of our water-based penis pumps.
HydroXtreme: adding the handball
HydroXtreme takes the Hydromax chamber and adds a detachable handball pump on a hose. That lets you adjust pressure with one hand without breaking the seal, rather than pressing the whole pump against your body. Sizes run from HydroXtreme3 to HydroXtreme11, which fits 9 to 11 inches. The kits add a carry case, measuring gauge, cleaning tools and lube, so you start with everything in one box.
Wide Boy and Crystal editions
Wide Boy versions of the Hydromax7 and HydroXtreme7 have a wider chamber. They suit men with a girth over 6.5 inches who find the standard chamber tight. Crystal editions use a fully clear body, so you can see the measuring marks more easily. Otherwise they work the same as the standard models. Pick Wide Boy for fit and Crystal for visibility.
Comfort pads, inserts and valve packs
Bathmate sells spare parts so a pump lasts longer. Cushion pads and comfort rings sit between the pump and your pelvis to improve the seal and reduce pressure on bone. Long comfort inserts line the chamber for a softer feel. Replacement valve packs fix lost suction on the Hercules, Goliath, Hydromax and HydroXtreme. Our hydro pump comfort rings list which pad fits which pump.
Power Rings and Vibe rings
Bathmate also makes cock rings to wear after pumping. The Spartan, Barbarian and Gladiator Power Rings use Elastomex, Bathmate's TPR and TPE blend. The Maximus rings come in 45 mm and 55 mm silicone versions, with Vibe models adding a 10-pattern bullet. The rechargeable Vibe Ring Strength, Stretch, Tickle and Eight add 3-speed vibration and charge by USB. Rings are a separate purchase from the pumps.
Pleasure and hygiene range
Beyond pumps, Bathmate sells a small pleasure range. It includes the Prostate Pro with three motors and 30 patterns, the Hand Vibe stroker and silicone anal training plug sets. Its hygiene line covers the Hydro Rocket douche, a misting toy cleaner, sterilising tablets that each make 5 litres of solution, and Pleasure Lube. The Trim 2.0 trimmer is rated IPX7 for shower use.
Bathmate styles at Adultsmart
Here is how to work through the range by need.
Pumps by size: picking the number
Bathmate names most pumps by the top of the erect length range they fit. A Hydromax5 suits 3 to 5 inches, a Hydromax7 suits 5 to 7, and a Hydromax9 suits 7 to 9. Choosing too large a pump weakens the seal. Choosing too small presses on the end of the chamber. Measure erect length from the pubic bone, then check girth against the listing.
Shower and bath use
Hydro pumps are made to be used with warm water, usually in the shower or bath. You fill the chamber, form the seal and pump out water, so the pump holds itself in place. A shower strap holds the pump hands-free. Our shower hydro pumps include every model suited to this, and the IPX7 trimmer helps you get a clean seal.
Cleaning and care kits
Water left in a pump can grow mould, so care matters. The Bathmate cleaning kit has a long brush with a sponge head that reaches the bellows, plus lint-free towels. Sterilising tablets dissolve in water for a deeper clean. The universal capsule case keeps the pump and parts together and dry between sessions. Let every part air-dry fully before you pack it away.
Timers and gauges
Bathmate's pump timer is waterproof and uses a green light for a three-minute pumping phase and a red light for a two-minute rest. It follows Bathmate's own guidance on short sessions with breaks. The measuring gauge reads in both inches and centimetres. Both help you keep sessions short and consistent rather than guessing. Neither is needed to use a pump, but many owners find the timer useful.
How a hydro pump works
A standard penis pump uses air. You place a cylinder over the penis, pump out air and create a partial vacuum. Air is compressible, so pressure can feel uneven, and the seal is easy to lose.
A hydro pump fills the chamber with warm water first. When you squeeze the bellows at the base, water is pushed out through a one-way valve at the top. Because water does not compress, the pressure spreads evenly around the shaft and glans. The warm water also makes the seal easier to form. The HydroXtreme handball does the same job with finer control. To release, press the valve and the vacuum lets go at once. our guide to how the Bathmate Hydropump works covers each step in detail.
Materials and build
Bathmate chambers are clear polycarbonate, a tough plastic that will not crack in a warm shower. The bellows and comfort pads are softer rubber or silicone, and some Adultsmart listings call these medical-grade, which is Bathmate's own term. Measuring marks are printed on the chamber in inches and centimetres.
Power Rings use Elastomex, Bathmate's blend of TPR and TPE. It stretches well but is slightly porous, so wash it after each use. The Maximus rings and anal plugs are silicone. Valves and caps are plastic and wear over time, which is why replacement valve packs exist. Pumps themselves need no batteries or charging.

Choosing your first Bathmate
Size comes first. Measure erect length from the pubic bone to the tip, and erect girth around the widest point. Pick the model whose number matches the top of your length range. If your girth is over 6.5 inches, look at a Wide Boy.
Next, pick the pump action. The Hydro7 and Hydromax are the simplest: squeeze the pump against your body. HydroXtreme adds the handball, which suits men who want finer control. If you shower more than you bathe, add a shower strap. Plan to buy a cleaning kit and spare comfort pads at the same time.
Who Bathmate suits — and who should look elsewhere
Bathmate suits men who want a hydro pump from the company that created the format, with spare parts available for years. It suits shower users, and men who like a clear numbered sizing system.
Look elsewhere if you want a dry pump with a pressure gauge or an electric pump, as Bathmate pumps are manual and use water. Skip pumps altogether if you have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners, unless your doctor agrees. Pumps are not a substitute for medical treatment, and we make no claims about size, erection or health outcomes.
Please read — safety first. Read the instructions for your model before first use. Use warm water, never hot, and test it on your wrist first. Keep sessions short and take breaks, as Bathmate's own timer guidance suggests. Release pressure at once if you feel pain, numbness or tingling, or see red spots, blisters or darkening skin. Never pump while drunk, under the influence or drowsy, and never sleep with a pump on. Talk to a doctor first if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder. The same applies to sickle cell disease, Peyronie's disease or past pelvic surgery. Wear a cock ring for no more than 30 minutes. This information is general in nature and is not medical advice. If you have a health condition or ongoing discomfort, stop use and speak with a qualified health professional. |
