The Assist N2O Gas Cracker: specs

The Assist cracker is a small threaded aluminium tube, 72 mm long and 25 mm across. It holds one standard 8 g N2O cream charger, the small steel bulb sold for whipped cream. Closing the cracker pushes a pin through the charger's seal, and the gas leaves through the outlet. The thread keeps the charger seated, so the gas releases evenly rather than in a burst. Two rubber grip bands give you a firm hold, which matters because the charger gets icy cold as it empties. The cracker does not include gas. Chargers are sold separately.

2-piece and 20-piece packs

Assist sells the cracker in two pack sizes. The 2-piece set gives you one to use and a spare, which suits a home kitchen. The 20-piece pack is built for volume, such as a café, a caterer or a large function with several prep stations. Colours include silver, red, yellow, black and blue. How a gas cracker differs from a cream dispenser

A cream dispenser, or whipper, is the bottle you fill with cream. It has its own charger holder that screws on to inject gas into the bottle. A gas cracker is a separate tool. It holds a charger on its own and controls how the gas comes out.

The Assist listing pitches the cracker for two jobs. One is a backup tool in the kitchen. The other is colour-coded tools that are easy to tell apart in a busy space. For everyday whipped cream at home, the holder on your dispenser does the main job, so you may not need a cracker at all.

Materials and build

The body is aluminium. It is light and does not rust. Rubber bands around the body give grip and keep fingers off the coldest metal. The thread is cut to seat a standard 8 g cream charger. Larger cylinders and other charger sizes will not fit.

After use, let the cracker return to room temperature. Rinse it in warm, soapy water, then dry it fully, including the thread, before storing it.

Choose the 2-piece set for a home kitchen. One cracker stays in use and the other is a spare. Choose the 20-piece pack if you run a café, cater events or set up several prep stations. Using N2O safely and legally

Food-grade nitrous oxide is used as a propellant in cream dispensers. Inhaling it is dangerous and can cause lasting nerve damage. Do not use any cracker to fill balloons or other containers for breathing in. Store chargers away from heat and out of reach of children.

The law on nitrous oxide gas varies across Australia. In Western Australia, supply of nitrous oxide is limited to approved buyers, such as registered food businesses and licensed venues. In New South Wales, new rules start on 5 November 2026. They add an 18+ age check, a daily purchase limit, a ban on cylinders over 10 g and no same-day delivery. These rules apply to the gas, so check your state's rules before buying chargers.

Who Assist suits — and who should look elsewhere

Assist suits adult home cooks, cafés and caterers who already use 8 g cream chargers and want a simple, sturdy cracker. It suits anyone who wants spares or colour-coded tools for several stations.

It is not for everyone. If you only make whipped cream now and then, your dispenser's built-in holder may be all you need. If you need gas, buy chargers separately, as none are included. And if you are under 18, or in a state where you cannot legally buy nitrous oxide, this product is not for you.
