About CalExotics

Susan Colvin founded California Exotic Novelties in 1994, as a woman leading a company in a business run almost entirely by men. Her aim was simple: make more inclusive sex toys with reliable motors, and stand behind them with a warranty. The company is based in Ontario, California, and now trades as CalExotics.

CalExotics says it was among the first to sell waterproof sex toys, offer manufacturer warranties, make rechargeable rabbit vibrators and run an all-women product team. It also introduced feminine colours to adult massagers. Its sister brand, JOPEN, makes its premium lines. Today Colvin still leads the company as CEO.

Awards and recognition

In 2011, CalExotics won XBIZ's Toy Manufacturer of the Year. It then won Pleasure Products Company of the Year – Full Range in 2016 and again in 2019. In 2018, the Nipple Play line took Sensual Accessory of the Year, and the CalExotics Institute won for retail education.

Design has been recognised too. The Silhouette S8 won a Red Dot product design award in 2016. In 2024 the company won StorErotica Pleasure Product Company of the Year. Colvin herself received the EroSpain Lifetime Award in 2025 and Sign Magazine's Business Person of the Year in 2026.
