Bi & Married Dilemma Of A Woman At Mardis Gras!

Mardi Gras

Happy Mardi Gras everyone! I love this time of year, everyone is gearing up in their rainbow kit and is ready to take to the streets loud and proud like it should be. Mardi Gras is one of the many things that makes me so proud to be Australian. I am so thankful for the work of the 78’ers and the groups and activists that came before and after them, because of these people our LGBTQIA+ sisters, brothers and non-binary family enjoy a level of equality that seemed unattainable 20 years ago (that isn’t to say the work is done *cough* Trans rights *cough*). We are celebrating the achievements of this marginalised community, showing up in support of them and finally at long last celebrating that we now have marriage equality!

LGBTQIA+ marriage equality passed

Is this for me? A married bi girl’s interesting relationship with Mardi Gras!

However for a bi girl who is in a relationship with a man (whom I also married) Mardi Gras can be a conflicting time for me. While I love Mardi Gras soooo much (seriously we need to start decorating our houses for Mardi Gras the way we do for Christmas) it is hard to see it as a celebration that I can be completely involved in. I feel this way because I have been told repeatedly to my face that I am, “not really queer” and while that pisses me right off, I also totally get where that perception comes from. As a white, straight seeming woman, I have not experienced the same level of discrimination and hard ship that some members of my LGBTQIA+ family have. I have never received an odd look or worse for holding my husband’s hand down the street; no one has ever threatened violence towards me because of my outwardly perceived sexuality or any of the other awful bullshit that is thrown unfairly towards the community.  I have had a charmed queer experience by comparison, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t had a queer experience. My queer experience may have been quieter than some others but it was profound and extremely important to me and the person I am still becoming.

So here is my problem, I am queer; I know this in my heart and my pants. But I also see people’s points to the contrary as well, I haven’t experienced the hardships that other members of the LGBTQIA+ community has; and because of this I understand how this may to some jade my “queer status.”

But this year, with Mardi Gras around the corner it got me thinking does a queer person have to go through a degree of torment to be considered properly queer or are we now getting to a point in our society (White Anglo-Saxon society, I acknowledge that this isn’t the case for many people both in and outside of Australia) where a queer person doesn’t have to have battle scars to be accepted. Isn’t that what the 78’ers were marching for in the first place?  Wide spread societal acceptance? I think so. I love hearing about young people now who didn’t have to “come out” to their parents, they just brought home the person they liked and were accepted for it, I love hearing about how queerness is now becoming part of normalness.

That doesn’t mean for a damn second I want us to lose our identity as a community, I want us to expand the idea of what the queer experience is. So that means for out, loud and wonderful queens, acceptance.  The button down corporate girl who isn’t all about her sexuality, acceptance. A non-binary person just existing, acceptance.

This is in no way a critique of the LGBTQIA+ community (in fact, the only people to tell me I wasn’t queer were straight people) it is rather a catch cry for wider society to expand its idea and definition of queerness so queer people can be whoever the hell they want. At last.

Happy Mardi Gras ?  If you are looking for help or support, check out the LGBTQIA+ services available in your local community.

Empire’s Sexiest ALL Girl Party Of The Year

Masquerade woman

My favorite time of the year is next month and in this article, I’ll be telling you all about the event I’ll be heading to after the main event.

2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Mardi Gras parade and at the end of 2017 Australia finally caught up with the rest of the world with gay marriage finally being legalized which means this year’s event is going to be a huge one that you will not want to miss out on!

Make sure to get to Oxford Street, Sydney early to ensure you have a good spot because usually the street is packed full of people hours before the parade even starts. Best to get a train or bus there and back home as some streets will be closed and the ones that aren’t are a lot busier than usual. Bring your friends and family and have an amazing time!

Now about the after party, I’ll be heading to after the parade is over….

Empire Sydney is one of the newer lesbian events, it happens once a month at the Hudson Ballroom on Liverpool Street in the city. They have been around for about 7 months now and every month it just gets better and better which means their Mardi Gras event is going to be massive!

Empire Mardi Gras Masquerade

This event is masquerade themed and lucky enough we have just the masks for you here at Oh Zone Adult Lifestyle Centres. Come into any of the three stores located in Penrith, Kogarah or Caringbah and make sure to ask our friendly staff to show you our full range of masks available. Or, if you’re not located anywhere near the stores here is a link to the online sex toy shop fancy dress mask range where you can order one to be delivered to you.

Doors open at 9 pm and unfortunately there is a lockout at 2 am so make sure to get there as early as possible. There is a trusty cloakroom for you to leave your belongings if you can’t be bothered holding them all night and there is also a lost and found area if you’ve misplaced anything during the night. Do not be the person who sees a phone or wallet on the floor and puts it in your back pocket, it’s not the type of club for that dishonest shit.

Everyone that walks into these events is super friendly so be prepared to make plenty of new friends and have a great night. They do not tolerate drunken boy groups that are just there to make the girls feel uncomfortable. If you find that anyone in there is making you feel unsafe, make sure to go straight to the security guards and let them know exactly what is happening so they can fix the situation. I’ve never had a negative experience at Empire and I’ve been to nearly all of them so I’m sure you won’t either so don’t stress about that.

There are plenty of different drinks to choose from at the bar and different DJs all with great different music to dance to all night. It starts with one room at the start of the night and then as more people start walking through the doors the second room opens up. Both rooms have a bathroom and couches with tables for you and your friends to sit down and chill if you need to just chill out for a bit. The smoking area is outside of the venue so just make sure to keep an eye on the time so that you don’t get locked out after 2, the security guards are usually pretty good at reminding how much time you have left when it gets closer to the lockout time but please don’t rely on that.

Important information from Empire to all the single humans who wouldn’t mind going alone but also do secretly want people to go with.

Don’t know anyone to go with? Are all your hetro friends too hetro to support your queer girl clubbing neeeeds? That is OKAY… cause WE GOT YOUR BACK here at EMPIRE. Sister Roma Creates the Stop The Violence Campaign!

Sister Roma in Purple Photo

In 1991, Sister Roma was in San Francisco and introduced her STOP the Violence Campaign. The introduction of the campaign was a reaction to the organised homophobia and transphobia hate crimes in the streets. A window placard system was devised to mark safe homes to run to in the instance of an attack or the threat of an attack. The STOP the Violence Campaign distributed window signs and whistles in the various neighborhoods, districts of the city as well as on college campuses which were used for people to call for help when being gay bashed.

She served on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and has participated in countless fundraising projects leading to strong relationships. She has helped a long list of causes that promote and serve the LGBT community.
She also educates people within the community on sexual health issues. One of her career goals is to be on the cover of Vanity Fair. This was easily done with the help of Photoshop. When Sister Roma asked about her career highlights she said:

“I have the arduous task of looking at naked men all day long as the Art Director at Hot House Entertainment.”

Sister Roma is habitually, perpetually and happily single, but enjoys brief encounters when visiting her beloved Puerto Vallarta. With a schedule like hers, when would she have time to nurture a relationship? Summing up her time with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, she said:

“In 25 years I’ve done it all baby! I’ve worked with everyone from AIDS to PAWS. I’ve served food at Thanksgiving with Tenderloin Tessie’s. I’ve painted kids’ faces for LYRIC. I’ve hosted a Masturbate-a-thon for the Center For Sex and Culture. I’ve moderated public forums on safer sex for the SF AIDS Foundation. Mostly though, I’m a loudmouth who is very comfortable on stage. I’ve been the MC at countless events for years, including Folsom Street Fair, AEF Christmas Eve Dinner, Easter in Dolores Park, SF Drag King Contest, Mr. & Miss Gay SF Contest, San Francisco Pride, Halloween In The Castro, Castro Street Fair, and AIDS Emergency Fund County Fair – to name a few. I’m thrilled whenever anyone thinks to invite me to be a part of their event.”

Some of Sister Roma’s favorite sayings include:

“Life’s a banquet and most poor sons o’ bitches are starving to death!”- Auntie Mame

“All men are created equal.”- Abraham Lincoln

“There’s only one true judge and that’s God, so chill, and let my father do his job.” – Salt N’ Peppa.

Sister Roma’s advice to others is simple:

“Be yourself. Accept yourself. Love yourself. Live your life however you want, and don’t listen to what other people say or think, especially drag queens in a newspaper interview, for God’s sake!”

Sister Roma is an inspiration to the entire LGTBQ community which she serves with passion and integrity.

Photo: Sister Roma

In addition to all her community and charity work Sister Roma also acts professionally as well as in more casual drag performances in clubs. In 2003 she appeared in Ronnie Larsen’s Sleeping With Straight Men at Theatre Rhinoceros with Mink Stole. Sleeping with Straight Men was produced to be a drama based comedy about the Jenny Jones murder case. Sleeping with Straight Men is filled with nudity and odd sexual scenes.

In Falcon Studio’s 1997 film High Tide, Sister Roma appeared with drag star and porn producer Chi Chi LaRue. High Tide had one of the largest casting of it’s time filled with beautiful men and large erections. The adult movie was based in the beautiful landscapes of Hawaii. The men are on the beach, hot and drenched with sweat which makes for some steamy scenes. This movie features Anders a man who has lost his memory, who is trying to get away from his fiancee. He tries to get to a private island to give himself some private time to work out what is going on. On the island he finds a man named Mr Tom Chase who had previously known him. Their connection reignites as Mr Tom Chase and Anders find themselves making out under a cascading waterfall.

In 2006, Sister Roma was nominated for Best Nonsexual Performance Gay Adult Video News (GAYVN) award for her portrayal of Mona Lott, the maid of Wet Palms which is a ten episode gay porn soap opera series. Wet Palms is based upon a man named Peter Dune who is an avid night clubber and is a gorgeous underwear model. He moves on from his old life of partying to be with a man named Tucker Bang who is a kind man that write articles for “Jetsetter” a gay gossip magazine. Simon Jett The Wet Palms hotel manager’s brother is trying to get into Peters pants.

Sister Roma also performed at San Francisco’s longest running drag show Trannyshack. Trannyshack is a drag show that runs once a week. It was originally founded by drag queen Heklina as a Study Bar which ran for 12 years. Trannyshack regularly draws big crowds to their shows. Sister Roma also writes a bi-weekly column Drag It for San Fransisco’s gay alternative magazine Gloss.

Come and meet this iconic drag queen who is one of the hardest working activists for the LGBTQI community at the exclusive FREE meet and greet at 6pm the 3rd of March 2017 at Park Street Books, Level 2/44 Park Street, Sydney. There will also be gay adult movie icons including Brent Corrigan, JJ Knight and Chi Chi LaRue.
