About Adam & Eve

Adam & Eve began in 1970 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Founders Phil Harvey and Tim Black were graduate students in family planning. They sold condoms by mail to fund family-planning work abroad, and that work became Population Services International. Later, in 1989, Harvey founded DKT International, which Adam & Eve's profits still help fund.

The mail-order business grew into adult products. Its parent company, PHE, Inc., is now based in Hillsborough, North Carolina. In 2004 it began franchising Adam & Eve Stores. In 2012 PHE licensed the brand to Evolved Novelties, which now designs, makes and packages Adam & Eve toys, lubes and cosmetics.

A legal fight that changed the industry

In 1986 federal agents raided Adam & Eve. In March 1987, a jury in Alamance County, North Carolina, took less than five minutes to find Harvey not guilty of distributing obscenity. Prosecutors then pursued the company in other states. Harvey sued the Justice Department in 1990, arguing that multiple prosecutions abused its power.

In 1993 the government agreed to halt obscenity prosecutions of PHE in any jurisdiction, and Harvey dropped his suit. He told the story in his book The Government vs. Erotica: The Siege of Adam & Eve. The Justice Department also said it would change its policy to discourage multiple prosecutions in obscenity cases.

Awards and recognition

Adam & Eve's awards are mostly for retail. At the 2021 XBIZ Awards, AdamEve.com won Online Retailer of the Year, and the franchise chain won Chain Retailer of the Year. StorErotica named Adam & Eve Stores its Retail Chain of the Year in 2017, the chain's seventh win in that category in ten years. In 2009 XBIZ gave Phil Harvey its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Adam & Eve product lines and sub-brands
