The rise and fall of the Bush

It is no secret that part of our human rite of passage is growing pubic hair during puberty. Thick coarse hair sprouts from our nether regions and continues to grow as we do. In fact we are the only Mammalian species that has thick coarse pubes. You may hate them, you may embrace them or maybe you don’t care either way but the practice of how and what we do down there has been part of cultural practice for hundreds of years.

So why do we have Pubic hair?

Science is a little grey on the exact reason why humans have pubic hair but there are several reasons hypothesised as to the reason behind the bush on men and women. Pubic hair creates cushioning and relieves friction during sex, and also intended as a “dry lubricant” the idea being that it is easier to rub hair against hair then skin against skin.

Pubic Hair keeps the genital area the optimum temperature during sexual arousal which can be theorised as an evolutionary response. The hair creates warmth but also allows for air flow to cool the area if it gets too hot, therefore giving it the best chance to regulate given the environment to ward off infection but also to keep the genitals the most fertile which, evolutionary, would lead to the best chance of procreation.

From an evolutionary standpoint, pubes are also thought to be designed to help attract mates. The hair, down there, is connected to the apocrine glands that secrete lipids, proteins and pheromones which cause body odour. This body odour changes when females especially are fertile, signalling to potential partners that they are ready for mating. The hair can act as a conductor and assist in wafting the pheromones as opposed to the sweaty body smell.

Despite the idea of catching and containing sweat, pubic hair is also theorised to keep bacteria away from the genitals, and in many studies shows that people who have shaved or have no pubic hair have a higher risk or history of STIs than people who have pubic hair.

So Why do people shave it?

Plucking pubic hair dates all the way back to the Egyptians where they would use copper tweezers or a sugar mixture to wax the hairs during Cleopatra’s reign. Women were depicted in paintings with pubic hair as a black triangle covering their nether regions or without.

Shaving was not the norm, having wild untamed bushes, or even manicured bushes were the standard well into the 1900s. Even well into the 70s porn celebrated women and men with thick hair below the belt. During the 80s and the 90s porn stars’ appearances became more critical, more in demand for sleek, trimmed and presentable pussies and penises, setting a trend that would soon begin to dictate how the world perceived the standard nether region. Higher rise leotards and swimsuits meant women were trimming their pubic hair to fit the fashion and remain pristine and spruce.

It wasn’t until the mid 2000s when waistlines on jeans dropped dangerously low at the front and underwear became scraps of triangular material that the amount of trimming reduced hair to almost non-existent. Brazilian waxes grew in popularity in salons and soon the Porn industry had reversed, having gone from having “shaved” as a niche to “Hairy” as the niche and “shaved” as the norm for both men and women.

This shift in the expectation in porn media also led to the expectation of what people understood was the norm when it came to sex and over 50% of young women believed that they needed to shave their Vulva’s to be socially accepted for sex and over 70% of young men expected women to have shaven vulva’s.

Many individuals report that a shaved vulva increases sensitivity during sex for them. Whether or not that is fact has yet to be definitively proven. While others report that it makes them feel sexier. For men the saying is “it makes it look bigger” and the trend has similarly followed. Men have also seen how men in porn are portrayed and adapted similarly; trimming or getting rid of the hair completely. For both genders the idea that pubic hair was in the way of or compromised oral sex also began to take over as an excuse which was not as forthcoming in the past.

During the Naughties (2010 onwards) Pubes began to make a comeback when celebrities started announcing that they were once again wearing that ‘70s’ look, and quoting the bush is back. Feminists began using growing out their hair as a symbol of taking back the power of their bodies and people regardless of their gender also took on growing out their pubes, underarm or leg hair as a reflection of self love- Loving the skin and hair of the body that they had.

Is this a trend that will rise and fall? Or was the brazilian wax the trend that is set to disappear? All we can say is that if you choose to remove or keep your pubic hair, choose to do it for you, because it makes you feel sexy and confident and helps you love your body and the skin you’re in.

Hair Or No Hair? That Is The Question…

A woman waxing her pubic hair for sexual health

The way my mind works is a little bit bizarre, with the things keeping me up at night being slightly different than your average person. Lately I’ve had a few questions in mind in regards to pubic hair and I am so grateful to have an outlet where I get to bring these strange internal queries to an audience. They go something like this;

When did the presence of pubic hair in pornography become a category of its own? What is the importance of porn? How does porn impact sexuality and body image? Are we really living in a time where the natural way a woman’s body is created is something to trim, wax, shave and primp? Is there anything wrong with the bald hair style trend? Or should we be embracing a full bush like they did pre-1980s?

Body Image In Society, Culture & The Media

It is most definitely not a new concept that women have felt the need to modify their appearance, with females dating back thousands of years changing their bodies using a range of methods – corsets, tattoos, piercings and feet binding are just some of the many practices women have implemented over time to change their appearance.

Since I can recall, for the most part, I have been exposed to images in the media and in pornography that almost denies the fact that women have hair on and around their genitals. Do not get me wrong, I am all for women doing with their bodies whatever they wish. I do however question whether clipping their nether regions is an empowered choice women make or if over time they have been made to feel that it is not normal to be a la natural.

Some people believe that there is something unclean with women who have pubic hair, with this a false idea. Pubic hair is normal, and it is womanly.  I think Hank Moody from the series Californication said it best

“While I’m down there it might be nice to see a hint of pubis. I’m not talking about a huge 70’s Playboy bush or anything. Just something that reminds me that I’m performing cunnilingus on an adult.”

One of the concerns I have regarding the inundation of portrayals of hairless women is the effect it may have on young women coming into puberty or women who do not desire to remove their pubic hair. Just like the possible impacts of seeing only size 6 models on Instagram may have on a curvaceous size 14 woman, I fear only being exposed to women in porn who have no pubic hair may make women with hair feel less than comfortable with their bodies. The lack of representations in mainstream pornography of women with all different hair styles gives the impression that everyone is hairless or needs to be to be considered “normal”!

I have heard of many women who absolutely must have clean shaven genitals otherwise they won’t be intimate with anyone – this is based on what they fear the person they are being intimate with will think if they are not. It frustrates me hearing things like this because

  1. I think it is absurd that women feel they can’t experience pleasure without somehow changing their bodies and…
  2. Women get so preoccupied thinking men care so much when they really don’t!

What Do Men Think About Pubic Hair?

I have spoken to many (good) men and the consensus is, they are just so grateful to be intimate with a woman, they do not actually care about her pubic hair! I think perhaps the ideas we have about men being swayed towards baldness as opposed to natural is because of the portrayals in pornography, without this being the case in every instance. Sure, there are some men and women who prefer no pubic hair and that is a completely valid preference to have. Preferences and differing desires is what makes human beings unique and I encourage people to stick to what truly feels good to them.

Changing Your Appearance Is A Personal Choice

I accept the fact that women have complete choice in what they do with their bodies and how they change their appearance and I in no way wish to condemn women for choosing to go hairless. I merely bring up this query as a way of getting women to think about why they shave or wax. Is it for aesthetics? Comfort? Pleasure? Or perhaps it is just done because it seems like the only option.

A partner who does not expect you to be anything other than your most authentic self is the only person worth being with ladies so I encourage you to look at your hair styling habits and decide what is right for you. It could mean that you keep on keeping on (aka shaving or waxing) but you may in fact discover that natural feels best for you. Mix it up and try different things, don’t just do something because everyone else seems to be. Maybe a landing strip or lightning bolt is your style, or perhaps keeping your bush neatly trimmed is your cup of tea. Trust yourself, honour your true desires and feel empowered in however you wish to treat your body. The most important thing to remember is that nothing is sexier than a confident woman who respects and feels good in her body, hair or no hair!

To Shave or Not To Shave?

Women with a Bushes Photo

“To shave or not to shave?” that is the question. Lasering, waxing, shaving, trimming, letting it all grow wild and free! Shaping, dying and even vajazzling. Good grief the options are endless. Fashions have changed over my lifetime and our individual tastes will always be different. But as a woman it is something that in the developed world we all have to spend ridiculous amounts of time and money dealing with.

When I was younger, I have to say, there was a lot less of it to deal with. A quick once over with a Bic shaver and I was ready to go. As you get older though, boy does that stuff multiply. I vividly remember staring, stunned, in absolute disbelief when I saw my first chin hair. A hair! On MY CHIN.. mamma mia! What is that all about? Little did I know once I plucked that little guy out, it was only a matter of a year or so before people were mistaking me for Osama Bin Laden.

Yes, age and life are cruel mistresses.  The hairs they steal from your head they donate to your stomach and bum crack. Nowadays, in middle age I often find myself tripping over my own armpit hair wondering why I have paws instead of feet and on occasions I even receive phone calls from my own vagina begging me to get in the forestry commission to do some controlled burning down there.

I am fat and pregnant. At the moment it’s been a few weeks since I even saw what was going on down there. Out of sight, out of mind and all that. That’s what I say. Unfortunately my partner doesn’t think the same. We have been together for almost 20 years. You would think he would accept me for all that I am, hair and all, just not that much hair apparently. It isn’t fair how fashions have changed. It’s not like a bit of a trim will do anymore, you have to be bald, completely and utterly bald… EVERYWHERE! In my day if a man wanted you to shave your pussy you would have thought he was a pedophile! Not any more though.

There is no doubt about it, shaving your face and body is a right royal pain in the arse. I got so fed up with all that landscape gardening, I actually decided to go down the old laser hair removal route a while ago and get rid of it once and for all.   It scared the shit out of me at first. I pictured myself having to lie prostrate, legs akimbo, straddled by some woman in goggles and a white coat, brandishing a lightsaber (That sounds quite hot when I put it like that).

Stranger seeing my bits?…mmmm, there is something not too pleasant about that. Then there is the cost of course. Do I really want to spend a month’s wages on this? Well I did and I couldn’t believe how quickly it was all over and like most people who go under the laser, I wondered why on earth I hadn’t done it years ago. Life was sweet, I have fair skin and very dark hair so I am the perfect candidate apparently. Only one treatment! I couldn’t believe it, a month went by and nothing came back.  Another month went by and still nothing. I went for my second treatment. Life had never looked better. I was walking around with a spring in my step, joy in my heart and a twat like a cue ball.

A niggling thought started to bug me though, at first it was just something that popped into my mind now and again but I began to dwell on it. What if hair came back into fashion? We sell heaps of “hairy” porn. And I began to think that if I wasn’t a fashion following, people pleasing sap sometimes, I quite like the look of a neat trimmed bush. It is after all a sign that a woman has reached sexual maturity and I have always thought it makes a nice smiley face when you look at the female form with its boobs for eyes and vaginal hair for the mouth. OH GOD what have I done? And other thoughts too started to creep in. Can you be too old to be hair free? Isn’t it cooler to grow old gracefully? Am I going to look like the equivalent of some old sad guy stuck with the fading tattoo mistakes he made in his twenties?

Well I needn’t have worried. Pregnancy does odd things to body hair. Once I got up the duff, I began to notice small patches of downy fluff appearing from nowhere.  I watched what would happen with eager anticipation, like a gardener waiting for his first spring blooms. ….and, well nothing else happened, nothing at all. Just small sprouts of downy fluff in odd wispy patches. There was nothing else for it, I had to start bloody shaving again, either that or stand outside and start fundraising for hair loss research because that is what I looked like.

I am not allowed to have more laser until after the baby comes along. So at least it gives me some time to decide what it is I want. Who knows? Now I have shaved the fluff off, it might be like the old days, in a few weeks time I will look like I have a giant sea urchin spreading out of my vagina and migrating down my inner thighs towards my knees.

Feminine, young, youthful, hair free, soft-skinned innocence. That is what we all seem strive for at the moment. Oh that and to have and a pristine, hairless, bleached -baby -pink, shiny anus you could eat your dinner off but that’s a blog post for another day. Pubes will probably always will be a hotly debated issue. And you can choose to do exactly what you want with them. There is no right or wrong and who am I to judge?

Man Shaving Abbs

It can be nerving and a bit scary wielding a sharp razor near your private area, even more when you’re a guy, so if you’re feeling nervous or hesitant about shaving down their then definitely keep reading for some Manscaping information. But why should you remove your manly bush? Maybe  it’s the anxiety and social norm to keep your area smooth and more aesthetically pleasing , maybe it’s what your partner wants or it could the fact that when your pubic hair is gone it makes your erection incredibly larger. You see, When your pubic hair covers up part of the shaft, visually it can seem much shorter but when the hair is gone, the hidden section of the shaft will be revealed and can make your penis look a half inch longer. But, of course you wouldn’t care about that, would you? If you’re still not convinced there are plenty of other benefits that you might not have known about or have heard of before.

A popular reason and important benefit for Manscaping is to the fight on genital hair is simply hygiene purposes. Something not to be forgotten about when it comes to anything genitals really is hygiene. With everything shaved it will be less prone to carrying sweat (so say goodbye to the funky funk in your trunk), it’s easier to keep clean and will stay cleaner for longer which will make your whole area more inviting too. When you’re wearing underwear with a bushy basement then there isn’t much room or oxygen to circulate down there which ultimately means that whatever odours that you do have down there become more pungent and noticeable. Shaving the hair off creates more airflow and a much nicer smelling pubic area.

Manscaping will make your shaft and scrotum look cleaner, but it will be healthier too. Without the obstruction of hair you can take advantage of your newly smooth area to examine your testicles regularly. It’s also peace in mind for your sexual partner/partners; they can be rest assured that they are protected from skin eruptions or unusual bugs. It even gives good evidence that you have nothing to hide down there. It’s not a surprise that even shaving can be considered sexy. Get your partner to help you shave, apply heaps of gel and tease the area with long strokes from the razor. You can even get lathered up with soap in the shower and shave under the warm stream of water for a bit more eroticism.

Photo: Manscaping

A shaved pubic region is much less prone to cuts during sex. Sometimes, when sex involves a hairy penis, the hair gets in the way and causes cuts in the genitals or even condoms. These cuts could be open doorways to infections. Eating a few hairs when you are giving oral isn’t really ideal so it’s important to keep downstairs ready for oral pleasure by keeping it hair free. The average woman will be more willing to tongue-please a shaved ‘johnson’ than a bushy one. So if you want to get really intimate, stay well-groomed down there.

Manscaping is simply more appealing. The benefits of having a shaved pubic area will be apparent straight away. A smooth scrotum begs to be touched. An unusual one and slightly related to another benefit is when shaved your preventing unwanted friction and chaffing in you junk. Because hair stores sweet and gunk it’s possible that it can get really hot and build up friction and possible forming of blisters or burns. Will all these benefits you would think anyone with hair is crazy not to remove it but it’s important to recognize that shaving downstairs has its downsides as well. Some women view men with pubic hair as manly and masculine, so the removal of it could feminise you or make you look like a child down there, which is very unappealing to a lot of people. Also keeping its shaved requires dedication and commitment. You have to keep it up if you want the look and to a lot of people that’s just too much time out of game of thrones to be worth it.

Something that everyone can relate to is when you freshly shave somewhere you essentially unleashing 1000 mosquito bites onto that area. The itching can be unbearable for beginners and people with sensitive skin. Sometimes when you cut it all the way it grows back faster, fuller and thicker. Most importantly is that you have to be careful not to castrate yourself, the balls are a sensitive spot and they do not need a razor poking and cutting down there. Manscaping can also cause razor bumps, allergic reactions, rashes and other uncomfortable side effects. Remember safety is important. So at the end of the day you have to make the choice if you want to be bare down there or have hair to spare. I honestly think having it all trimmed is the safest, most hygienic and simply the easiest to upkeep especially if you have one of those electric razors (less risk of cutting your balls off).
