To Douche Or Not To Douche?

Skwert Water Bottle Douche Adapter Image

A topic maybe not frequently spoken about might be a little embarrassing for some, but it’s certainly searched through the inter webs a lot. Countless upon countless blogs and articles outlining the do’s and the dont’s when it comes to anal douching. With anal douching just like everything else there are risks both ways. If you don’t douche… well those risk are clearer. If you do decide to douche, how and with what are very important. The following is simply some facts about the biological effects that can occur from douching vs not for you to mull over, the decision is ultimately yours to make as you see fit. I am not a medical professional simply a Human Sexuality and Psychology Graduate.

What is Douching?

It might be best for me to start off by explaining for anyone who isn’t familiar, what douching is. Douching is a cleaning aid system that involves passing water through the anus into the rectum and lower bowels or colon. This part of the body is where our digestive waste collects before disposal. The process of douching can be done in several ways from bulbs to attachments for your everyday household taps and showers. You can find these at any of our Oh Zone Adult Lifestyle Centre or online at the Adultsmart store.

Anal Sex And Sexually Transmitted Infections

It is already common knowledge that with anal sex comes a higher risk of STI infection including a higher risk of HIV, and that this is due to the lining of the intestines/bowels to be so thin and therefore it is very fragile, this is why having safe sex is important. What might not be as commonly known is that sphincter or anus acts as a sort of warning barrier in terms of the cluster of nerves that it contains and the design of the muscles. The muscles face outwards to align with the peristalsis or digestive direction i.e. bowel movements. Just entering the anus goes against its physiology so care must be taken. The anus is also full of pain receptors like the skin only in more numbers, they are there specifically there to warn the body of any “aggressive intruder” if you will. These pain receptors have to be gently enticed to relax. Now one might think the solution would be to go slow and use lube? Only it’s not that simple, these specifically placed pain receptors are only located in the first 5cm of the asshole itself, meaning any bump, scratch or tear could go unnoticed causing serious damage and possible infection. But we’re not talking about anal sex, the process of douching can easily have damaging effects.

Does Water Impact The Linings Of The Bowel?

One of the biggest concerns with douching is that by adding water to the bowels you can damage the fragile lining which of course is true. This fragile lining is designed to absorb water, but when it absorbs water in access it increases blood flow to the heart which carries many of its own dangerous risks. When the lining itself is damaged or waterlogged this leads to higher chance of infections.  Inserting the nozzle of the douching device brings a high risk of cutting or tearing the lining, which we have already stated brings high risk of infection. These are all true and bring high risks, which is why taking due care when douching is so important. A common topic that often gets brought up in the debate that is “Douching” is that overuse or frequent use will interfere with your natural workings, and that you could end up dependent on stool softeners and laxatives. There just haven’t been any long term studies actually looking at in depth the effects of frequent anal douching that can conclusively support this.

Why Do People Use Douches?

Now after discussing all the terrible things that can occur from damaging one of the most fragile parts of the body, you might be asking yourself why? Why put yourself at that kind of risk? It’s obvious to anyone reading this you already know the pleasures of anal play, or have been enticed enough to begin your research. You obviously want to experience the pleasures that come with anal interaction and want to be safe about it. So again ask to douche or not? Scat play or sex that involves poo is a fetish “Coprophilia”, is it right for you?

It is important to know that any interaction with fecal matter or poo brings a risk of bacterial infection. Unprotected penetration can cause severe UTI’s in men when fecal matter enters the urethra, Hepatitis A and E are also commonly found in feces, so oral or rimming an area containing feces is also very risky. There are also numerous GI (Gastrointestinal) diseases carried out of the body in this waste, such as Salmonella. The list and the symptoms are endless and none of them seem enjoyable and many can be fatal if not treated.

With all the above information and any other sources you find, it’s time for you to assess your comfort level with fecal matter or “poo” before deciding if douching is right for you. You might be one of those people who has regular bowel movement. When I say regular I mean regular on time and regular of a solid consistency that leaves you feeling completely evacuated. If you are, well la di da aren’t you special! Jokes, if you are you might be confident enough to know your schedule and be able to get away with a quick shower and a thorough cleaning between the cheeks and maybe a quick insert of the finger and you’re ready for insertion. There’s always the small small chance of something left behind. To quote the phrase “Shit happens” it’s true, when playing in this region it’s bound to happen. So how do you feel about that?

I have presented you with many but certainly not all of the biological risks involved with douching or not, the decision is yours!

Let Me Tell You How I Get My Pretty Love!

Pretty Love Bunny Photo

Pretty Love, the high-end brand from Baile is inspired by fashion and aesthetics aimed at the modern user with high quality and attractively designed products. Baile has been bringing us creative and fun designs since 1993 with their professional team of sex toy and adult product designers having designed and produced over 3,000 products that are sold worldwide including to us here at Oh Zone Adult Lifestyle Centres and on our online store Adultsmart.

When I First Saw The Pretty Love Bunny

The Pretty Love Bunny lives up to Bailes design concept by being modern and stylish yet very cute, this clitoral and insertable vibe is a lovely bright purple with a sleek silver metallic band and it is shaped as its name would suggest, like a bunny complete with ears for added varied clitoral stimulation.

After I was given the Pretty Love Bunny to review I went home and hastily opened the box, first off I was happy to find a nice little black drawstring mesh style bag to store my Bunny in but the cardboard box the toy comes in is definitely sturdy enough to serve as additional storage for you to keep your Pretty Love Bunny in if you desire. Secondly, I was in love with the shade of purple the Bunny comes in although I may be biased as purple is my favourite colour, apart from green, I also loved how unexpectedly cute I found the Bunny and instantly liked this toy on looks alone but looks alone doth not a good sex toy make, so keep reading to see what I thought about Pretty Loves rechargeable Bunny vibe.

Pretty Love Bunny Measurements Photo
Sex Toy: Pretty Love Bunny Measurements

Pretty Love Bunny Features

The Bunny is light weight yet it is heavy enough at 47grams to sit nicely in your hand and at 12.5cm by 3.2cm ears included it is a perfect size and its shape is equally well designed. The body safe, soft silky touch silicone the Bunny is made out of is very nice and smooth and paired well with my water based lube and was easily cleaned after use with hot water, toy cleaner and then more water to rinse leaving it good as new.

This almost seamless design includes some very gentle and subtle ridging underneath the ‘head’ of the Bunny intended to increase pleasure for if you use the Bunny internally but also for when using this toy on a clitoris, the design of this toy is really fun with not only the body of the toy giving off vibrations but the ears of the Bunny give off a different and very pin pointed vibration which can be intense (in a good way!) for clitoral stimulation for women. With 12 vibration functions to cycle through, including a variation in the intensity of vibrations and patterns, I’m sure you will land on one or a combination of that is perfect for you!

Pretty Love Bunny Labels Photo
Sex Toy: Pretty Love Bunny Labels

Now a downfall to this product for me was the controls and the vibration style, I found these buttons really hard to press and impossible to find and control during my use of this toy, this may not be an issue for everyone but for me, it was definitely a struggle along with the relatively mild vibrations that are fairly buzzy which if you or your partner have a sensitive clitoris or don’t need very deep vibrations this is perfect for you, the ears are especially great for when you’re already close to climax (but not necessarily to get you there) as they are a very pin pointed vibration and the best use of this toy for someone like me. Unfortunately, these two things and took away from the Bunny as being a high-end item in my opinion although still a good product.

Some of the other quality features that the Pretty Love Bunny does have include, the Bunny being waterproof and rechargeable. Recharging your Bunny is as easy as opening the plastic cap at the base of the toy and plugging in the universal USB style charger which then plugs into any USB compatible device or wall adapter and socket to charge, being a USB rechargeable toy, with its handy little draw string carry bag and small size means you can discreetly take your Bunny with you anywhere you go around the world using any (USB) wall socket or computer/laptop to recharge it.

My Final Thoughts

All in all Pretty Loves rechargeable Bunny vibe is the perfect starter toy if you’ve never bought a sex toy before and you aren’t sure on what your clitoris likes id start off with the Bunny, it’s mild yet has some oomph when using the ears of the toy. Or a cute little addition to your night stand if you already know you are a fan of the less intense vibrations it has to offer.

3 Things People Fear About Anal Sex

Two Men After Anal Photo

There’s a lot of fear when it comes to anal play and yet, there’s still much curiosity about it. I was reminded of this idea when a young straight lad came into one of the stores this evening and asked a few questions regarding anal – despite the fear there’s still an abundance of curiosity regarding this type of play. More so, as we slowly move beyond the idea that sex is purely for reproduction and instead focus on the more sex positive attitude that sex is for pleasure as well.  This article is about breaking down the fear of anal play and we will do that by first acknowledging those fears, stripping them back and then talking about the ways to engage in anal play in a safe and comfortable way.

Anal Sex’s Ick Factor

There’s the whole shit on the dick thing. We’ve all heard the story about that one time when so and so’s friend had that awful experience when it came to that one night. This fear is fairly common, and it stems from our upbringing. The studies have shown that when a small impressionable child starts curiously playing with their genitals, and they’re told that that’s a dirty thing to do – then obviously they associate that feeling with their genitals. Some people grow out of it, some do not, and as a result whether we acknowledge it or not, our relationship with sex, sexuality and our bodies stems largely from our upbringing and the way those around us deal with issues of sex.  Our relationship with anal is largely because many individuals associate it with part of the human waste system. It’s an out not an in, is a common phrase which reinforces this idea. Let’s debunk this. Unless the body is just about to pass waste, or has recently done so – then there is actually very little chance of the dreaded shit on the dick factor. The anal cavity actually has a very thorough self-cleaning system which works really well. Yes, there are some risks if you’re playing rough, or you’re dealing with long toys or dicks, but in general the risk is actually quite small. The more you know!

Anal Sex’s Gay Factor

Butt sex, ass play, has long been considered the domain of gay men. There are countless ‘help me’ articles in magazines from concerned girlfriends who are worried that they’re beautiful boy is suddenly about to turn into a drag queen because he likes a bit of finger action. I’m not too sure where this one started, but anal play is not the domain of gay men. What might even surprise you, is that there are a lot of gay men in the world that don’t enjoy anal sex.  In an article by the Journal of sexual health and medicine, a study involving 25,000 gay and bisexual identifying men, stated that over 75% of participants responded with that their most recent sexual encounter involved the receiving or giving of oral sex. Contrast that with 36% of participants responding with their most recent sexual encounter involving anal play. In fact, mutual masturbation, kissing, genital and genital contact is a far more frequent occurrence among gay men. This is actually an issue which is fading over time. As people are becoming more in tune with their bodies, more comfortable in their sexuality and their openness about sex and sexuality – the stigma about anal play is slowly being broken down. Considering that prostate play is some of the most intense orgasmic experiences that a male can feel and massaging the prostate has benefits – then there’s a lot of people missing out on great sex because they think it’s a bit gay. The thing is, that anal play is not synonymous with a sexuality.

Anal Sex’s Ouch Factor

Anal sex can hurt. In saying that, there’s usually a few very select reasons as to why it hurts. One of the main reasons as to why it hurts, is because you think it’s going to hurt.  Consider the first time that you had sex, the awkwardness of it, the way it hurt a little and the way that it might have been over in just a few minutes. Very few first times are awesome, and what happens is they might have a bad experience which tarnishes any future experiences towards anal play. What we generally find, especially with younger partners, is they might rush through anal play for the first time, and this in turn can cause discomfort. Anal sex is not like other variation of penetrative sex. It requires patience, lubricant, and a recognition that the body might take time to adjust. There’s a myriad of different factors that need to be considered, but the main one that’s often ignored – is the fear. The anxiety. Which in turn affects the body’s ability to relax and you’ll tense up and it will hurt.

Tips for Anal Sex

Anal sex is not necessary. You’re not obligated to add it to your sexual to do list, and quite frankly, the best way to have anal sex is to want it. When you want it, when you’re curious, when you’re relaxed and able to enjoy it is the best time to have anal sex. And, if I’m being honest, when you’re horny as all hell.  This combination of things is going to make anal play so much easier.  Once you’re used to it, you’ll find it much easier to add to your routine.

Patience. Patience is necessary when it comes to anal play. The muscles are involuntary, therefore it will take time for them to adjust to having something there which is not normally so. Lubricate some, put more lubricant on, and breathe.

If you’re really worried about some mess, then you can use a douche to help prepare. But one following the instructions on a douche you will need to wait about an hour before having sex. Also, don’t use that one hour to travel to your playmates house as the water needs to dry up and could end up on your favourite underwear. Douche, wait half an hour, and then start moving.

Follow these tricks will help you in riding that pole like a pro.

What Do Good Sex Toys Feels Like

Sex Toy Made From Different Materials Image

Working in this industry it is really easy to forget that people may not know information about sex toy materials. Perhaps one out of ten customers have a concern with the material in a specific toy, as a sex educator I try to make it a point to point out whatever material is in each toy I am describing only rarely does it go beyond that. I thought it might be important to share a few quick observations in what I think is crucial information for many of the materials that make up many sex toys today. I will include any concerns you might have using the material and how best to clean each of them.

Sex Toy Material’s And Allergies and Cleanliness

Some of the things you as a consumer might be concerned with might be allergies, common materials people are allergic to in sex toys are but not limited to, Latex, Nickel and even MCS ( Multiple Chemical Sensitivity). MCS sounds worse than it is, it’s basically an umbrella description for people with sensitive skin. This can, of course, present itself in varying degrees depending on the person. Another concern one might have is cleanliness. Some materials are more bacteria prone, these toys tend to be porous in nature, having tiny holes for microscopic bacteria to fester and grow. These toys need extra care when cleaning and should be replaced more regularly. Also important is to use a condom if you’re ever sharing these toys specifically.

What Are Phthalates?

The most recent surge in ingredient fear is Phthalates.

Let’s discuss what Phthalates are. To be specific they are a group of chemicals that when combined aid in softening and increasing flexibility in plastics. There is no conclusive study that tells us in what quantity do phthalates become harmful. Further studies are required to conclude how much phthalates are considered non-toxic. Some of the side effects of Phthalates have been linked to affecting: fertility in both egg and sperm, breast cancer and hormones. Again these are linked not necessarily directly affecting.

It is important to keep in mind that when a label reads “Phthalate free” They are only referring to the specific material of the toy itself. This means that any additions to the toy like handles, buttons or painted details may not be phthalate free.

Common Sex Toy Materials

Now that you have an idea of what concerns you might want to pay attention to for yourself have a read through of the most common materials.

BS Atelier GSpot Sex Toy Photo
Sex Toy: BS Atelier GSpot

Many would argue this is the most life-like feeling material with strong durability. Silicone is Non-toxic, it is also considered hypo-allergenic and has the potential to last a life time. Silicone is non-porous so less worry for bacteria making a home on your favourite toy. One of the major drawbacks to the silicone toys is that they cannot be stored together. Each individual toy must be stored in its own bag. This will keep the silicone from degrading against each other, it will also help keep lint off your toy.

Because of the way silicone reacts with other silicone, you will want to avoid using silicone or combo lubes with these toys. Better to use a water based lube like the new “WICKED Aqua” found at Oh Zone stores now!

Teagan Presley Masturbator
Sex Toy: Teagan Presley Fleshlight

For those who like to live within the realm of reality, Cyberskin might be what you’ve been looking for. This material is the most life like texture and even warms in response to use like real flesh. Cyberskin is a collection of chemical materials that create soft flesh like material. This material is Phthalate free, however, studies on the effects of the specific materials over long-term have not taken place. Cyberskin is very very stretchy and surprisingly durable. Much like silicone, Cyberskin must be stored separately from other toys as it tends to stick or almost melt to other toys. Also, only water based lubes will do.

Pure Aluminium Black Sex Toy Image
Sex Toy Pure Aluminium

Stainless Steel/Aluminium

Easily the most durable of toy materials. Stainless Steel is easy to care for and user-friendly. Works well with all lubes, and easy to care for, simply wash in warm soapy water or you can use your favourite antibacterial sex toy cleaner. My Choice would be the “Tom of Finland Pleasure Tools Cleaner”, found on the Adultsmart website.

As it is a dense metal we can rest assured that these toys will be phthalate free as well it won’t have pores to host bacteria growth (care must be taken when cleaning if the toy has ridges or grooves). These toys can be relatively heavy but generally sit mid range in price point for those interested.

One thing to consider before using Stainless Steel toys is that they may have traces of Nickel in them, so if you have nickel allergy its best to avoid.

You can always try an Aluminium toy if you’re worried the Nickel in Stainless steel. Aluminium is much lighter weight than the Stainless steel and can be damaged easier. However, they are pore free and easy to clean.

Talea Spreader Bar Bolster Sex Toy Photo
Sex Toy: Talea Spreader Bar Bolster

PVC has been a long-time favourite toy material, it is soft and pliable. PVC is Latex free however it can be quiet porous. No guarantee against phthalates, this is because of the porous nature of PVC. There is no phthalate in the actual makeup of PVC.

When playing with PVC water based lubes are always best. Another easy way to clean the toy is to use warm soapy water or a good anti-bacterial toy cleaner is recommended.

Stretchy Cock Ring by OxBalls Sex Toy Image
Sex Toy: OxBalls Cock and Ball Sling

TPR & TPE (Plastics)

Both of these materials are commonly used for their benefits during manufacturing. Both are a heat reacted plastic, TPE becomes much more elastic like with a strong durability level. TPR is much like rubber and has a very high tear threshold. TPR is considered to be hypo-allergenic. Because these materials are soft, to begin with, there will be no phthalates added to them in the process, they are also latex free.

These materials are however porous and require care when cleaning. Like silicone, the TPR and TPE toys cannot be stored with other toys of similar materials as they react with each other.

Bottom Line Butt Plug Model 7 Black Sex Toy Image
Sex Toy: Bottom Line Butt Plug Model 7 Black

These toys tend to be inexpensive to make and therefore sold. While the popularity of rubber toys is on the decline with other like Hypo-allergenic toys making their way to shelves, these toys are still great. Perfect for a first timer wanting to try something new before spending the big $$.

As rubber is naturally soft and flexible no phthalates are added to the material, it does, however, contain latex. Rubber is also very porous naturally and requires extra cleaning care. Due to its porous nature, I don’t recommend keeping these toys too long.

This is not a complete conclusive list of all materials, but I think it should give you the reader a better idea of what you should be looking for or at least what to avoid. Don’t forget the staff at all Oh Zone stores are willing and eager to answer any question you might have.

We-Vibe Nova Bends Just For You

We-Vibe Nova Rabbit Vibrator

“This vibrator…… WOW.”

Now, I don’t know if you are familiar with the very popular and very open radio hosts on KIIS FM, Stacey June and Kristie Mercer from The Thinker Girls but in case you haven’t, the above is a direct quote from Kristie Mercer who was gifted a Nova by We-Vibe and well, it sounds like she had some pretty great things to say about it. Firstly she expressed that she was sent the vibrator for free from the We-Vibe company but is not being paid to talk about it or in this case rave about it.

After listening to the show and hearing this rave review from one of the hosts I decided to put this Nova to the test for myself.

“Intense encapsulating whole body feeling”

This vibrator is definitely one of a kind, designed by the awesome company who bought us all the infamous We-Vibe 4 and Sync, which are both award winning couple’s sex toys out there in my opinion. This vibrator takes solo play to a new level of intensity and fun with dual stimulation like never before.

When I First Saw The We-Vibe Nova

When I first saw the Nova I honestly thought it looked strange and wasn’t quite grasping the concept of the design. Firstly, it’s shaped like a typical G-spot vibrator with a perfectly angled head for finding just the right spot, but then your eyes are drawn to the clitoral stimulator which is curved out and almost loops back into itself. My first thought was definitely “WTF” but then I got a little bit worried that this vibrator might not fit me, or that it might be uncomfortable. But as the company explains, this toy has a unique design unlike any other; Nova flexes with you and stays in constant contact with the clitoris to give you true simultaneous stimulation unlike anything you’ve ever felt before. And after a little more physical research I can say with confidents that this is definitely accurate, although it might look different, don’t judge a vibrator by it clitoral stimulator.

So we now know that this vibrator has a weird but wonderful design aimed specifically at hitting that G-spot and stimulating the clitoris at the same time, but what else? What makes this toy better than others? Well let’s talk about some key aspects of the design and features this vibrator can offers us, which really makes this one of a kind.

Some Key Features Of The Vibrator Are:

  • 10+ pre-set modes of vibration allowing you to choose your favourite mode and increase or decrease the intensity to suit you.
  • The control panel is very straight forward and easy to navigate, with 4 simple buttons that will increase and decrease speed and the mode you require, as well as a simple “hold down for 2 seconds to activate”.
  • 100% Body Safe Silicone – free from phthalates, latex and BPA. This high grade silicone also makes for very easy and comfortable insertion.
  • Whisper quiet enabling for discreet use.
  • 100% Waterproof – Due to the magnetic charging point you are able to completely submerge the vibrator into the water which makes for unrestricted fun.
  • Rechargeable – The nova is charged through a USB charging cable and attaches to the toy via magnets.

The We-Connect Application

Now another feature that We-Vibe is famously known for is their self-created app. All toys in the range come “APP READY”, all you have to do when you buy one of their products is to download the free We-Connect application to your mobile and that’s where the fun begins.  This app allows users to control and customise setting and modes of vibration straight from there smart phone, and according to my personal research you are gifted 6 extra vibration motions when you use your toy with the app, this not only makes for great solo play but it also helps make it a two man or woman job, because including your partner is what We-Vibe are great for.

“The peak that I reached with this toy is more intense then the peak I feel with the real thing”

So you know all the features, you know how it works, you’ve heard the quotes grabbed from KISS 106.5 The Thinker Girls very own experience. But is there any bad or not so great things about this vibrator? Honestly….no. We-Vibe really hit the G-spot with this one and I have no complaints.
